The sprawling love story has proven a challenge to many filmmakers, but this version is acclaimed as the most successful. A sumptuous feature which took three years of planning and another for production, it was a hugely popular and critical hit which still stands out as a classic of both 18th century literature and 1960s moviemaking.

Mysterious songstress Fang Biyu is loved by two brothers, Qiwei and Qijun. After freeing herself from the clutches of gangsters, she gives her heart to Qiwei. Tragedy comes knocking on the door when one of the gangsters comes out of prison, and Qiwei dies in a car accident. The creative person torn between ideals and reality is one of Chor Yuen's favourite characters in his 1960s films. Another favourite subject is the rose, not only featured in the title of several films but is also the name of the production company he formed with his future wife, Nam Hung, who also stars in most of its productions. Rose in Tears is in fact the company's inaugural project. The story features two painters, one famous and the other struggling but both infatuated with the same delicate rose of a woman, negotiating their ways through art, commerce and love. With this heart-tugging story, Chor finds a vehicle for his baroque impulses, relishing in lavish images and over-the-top emotions.

Julie Yeh Feng stars as Hsiu Hsiu, a beautiful singing shepherdess who falls head over heels in love with a handsome boatman named Liu Ta Lung. Unfortunately, she can't afford to marry her new beau because her father has racked up numerous debts due to his uncontrollable gambling addiction. And to make matters even more complicated, there's a rival suitor who promises to pay off all of her no-good father's debts on the condition that he is given Hsiu Hsiu's hand in marriage. She initially declines his offer, but starts to get jealous when she sees Ta Lung getting a little too close for comfort with another woman. In retaliation, she starts flirting with her possible benefactor/husband-to-be. But what Hsiu Hsiu doesn't know is that her jealousy isn't based on any actual unfaithfulness, but on an unfortunate misunderstanding!

Chui spoils his wife Fan Kam-ping. She becomes lazy and dependent on Tang. Fan finishes his study and returns. He decides to transform his elder sister. He asks her best friend, Pang Shui-ha, to persuade her. Pang has a crush on Fan. Pang uses this opportunity to get intimate with Fan. Tang originally thinks that after Fan comes back, she no longer has to live in somebody's shelter. But Fan spends all his time with Pang. Tang is unhappy and drinks to vent her unhappiness. Tang gets drunk and Chui takes care of her. However, Ping thinks that they have dubious relationship and throws Tang out. Tang falls down a slope and loses one leg. Fan is angry with himself and decides to marry Tang. Ping also realises that she is wrong. She decides to change her lazy character and takes care of the disabled Tang.

Return Of The Phoenix is yet another masterpiece from prolific director Li Han-hsiang. An imperial minister Cheng Pu (Ching Miao) is faced with a quandary. He's getting old and his daughters are still not married. Elder daughter Shueh-yeh (Elizabeth Chuang) is so ugly no one wants her. Younger daughter Shueh-wu (Li Hsiang-chun) is beautiful but Mrs Cheng refuses to let her marry before her elder sister. The drama unfolds when Cheng decides to marry Shueh-wu off.

Director Wong Yiu, recognising the spending power of a new demographic, was looking to create a teenage sensation for the factory girls. It soon became a social phenomenon in the 1960s. Former child star Connie Chan Po-chu fitted the bill perfectly with her doe-eyed innocence framed by silky long hair. In Girls are Flowers, she plays a young tutor falling in love with a handsome boy. However, their road to romance is paved with potholes and speed bumps. Chan's fellow former child star Nancy Sit plays the boy's younger sister who saves the day with her shrewd, nimble-minded plans. Sit's role may be small but with radiance from her glorious smile and beaming personality, she brightens up this musical romantic comedy like a fairy-tale nymph.

When Ming’s “ghost” appears, Zhu vows to marry him, holding a midnight wedding to fulfill his mother’s wish. Suspecting Ming is alive, the Police Chief arrests Zhu and Ming’s mother. Ming’s friend, Law Sagull, rescues Zhu, convincing her to join the underground movement. They disguise themselves to help Ming’s mother escape, but Ming fails to free her. Later, Ming appears at a celebration to perform, as the underground group surrounds the officials. Ming confronts and kills the Police Chief, revealing he survived and that another comrade was tortured in his place. Reunited, Ming and Zhu join the revolutionary cause.

Chen Hou is a chauffeur who gets caught in a mistaken identity scandal linking him to businesswoman Lok Dai. Chen was supposed to audition for a job as her chauffeur, but a proposed musical show is far more attractive to the aspiring dancer. When a rumor gets out that the two are involved in an affair, she's angry and confronts him, but his charms overwhelm her, and it's revealed that she too desires to dance. Soon she's bankrolling the affair, the sets are being built, and the singing and dancing begin!

Overseas student Zheng Yihua and her native Korean classmate Soo-ok are bosom friends. Suspecting appendicitis, Zheng is rushed to the hospital for an emergency operation performed by Lee Sang-hyun. Soo-ok falls head over heels for the surgeon, who ironically takes a fancy to his patient. The romance turns the friends into foes. An embittered Soo-ok ruins Zheng's reputation with malicious gossips intended for Zhang Zhen, Zheng's father's personal assistant and the daughter's fiancé during his business trip to Korea. The wary mother of Lee demands the girl's parting from his son. Answering her lover's plea, Zheng stays, quietly enduring the scorn rained down on her from the mother. Having had enough of slander and accusations, the foreigner returns home, vowing never to return. Even the blessing from Lee's father fails to change her mind. The film follows three sisters’ ups and downs that begin with this youngest one’s jealousy. In the film, Pearl Au Kar-wai stars as a very charming actress, who is loved by every person around her. The little sister envies her sibling’s achievements but what she does impulsively has caused permanent harm to the family. Besides Siao and Au, Woo Fung, still an active TV actor today, took up the role of Au’s once boyfriend, and Fanny Fan Lai and Roy Chiao, well-known for their roles in Mandarin films, took a bold step to partake in this Cantonese film. Director Chu Kea, best known for his period dramas, turned to a contemporary-set film this time, and successfully delivered the film’s sense of modernity, probably with help from his co-directors Ho Hoi-ki and Chu Yat-hung, who was his sister. The opening scene of an orchestra performance even reminds the audience of Hollywood movies.

Huangmei Opera movies like The Pearl Phoenix are unique to 1960's Hong Kong culture, a product of the Swinging Sixties but considerably more in touch with their Chinese roots. This one is complete with a gender-bending tale where the male lead is played by female and the female lead poses as a man, plus movie queen Li Ching and the singing voices of Ivy Ling Po and Jing Ting. Ivy Ling Po was at the height of her fame in traditional Huangmei Opera films -- and chiefly as a male impersonator -- when she radically changed her image, taking on an ultra-contemporary semi-musical role in Song Of Tomorrow. Ivy plays a dance hostess and leading man Chiao Chuang is a jazz drummer, but with a difference. Chiao is a heroin addict, and Ivy learns that heroin is a far more lethal adversary than "the other woman" when trying to keep their marriage intact.

Working as a telephone operator on the nightshift, David Lau received some calls from a woman for a David and agrees to a blind date. Wearing a violet on his lapel, David mistakes someone else for his date. Movie queen Ivy Ling Po is ideally cast as a male scholar in this historical Huangmei Opera romance. It’s a tragic love story between the scholar and a local beauty (played by Fang Ying). He polishes mirrors as a pretext to get closer to his love, who signals her approval by tossing him a bunch of lichees. From that point on the course of true love proves operatically rocky, complete with murder and suicide.

The third film of ‘The Greatest' film series plays down cultural differences for an amusing cross-dressing comedy that features another great collaboration between Leung Sing-por and Liu Enjia. This time, Leung puts on omega hair and woman's clothing, posing as a rich woman in order to help his two friends get love. Liu is equally amusing, sharing the dance floor with Leung in a hilarious dance scene. Loosely based on the British play Charley's Aunt, the film is a delightful comedy on grassroots, offering a refreshing alternative to MP & GI's usual line of comedies.

Spring Blossoms is a parable about the Chinese youth culture and what's important to the younger generation when it comes to romance. It starred a new wave of seventies, Shaw's beauties, Lily Li, Shu Pei-pei and Essie Lin-chia as single women looking for love. It's a triple-decker romantic bus ride on a road to nowhere speeding toward a low bridge.
