The Drummer

An itinerant drummer boy is visited in his sleep by a beautiful princess. She requests his help in escaping from an evil witch who has entrapped her on the glass mountain. He sets out to find the mountain and is helped on his way by a rather pathetic old giant and a magic butterfly who lends him a pair of wings. Finally, he arrives at his destination and the witch sets him to work on three impossible tasks... The Drummer was one of the winning entries in 'The Magic Mirror' competition to find new animators for children's stories. The main condition was that the stories had to be adapted from existing fairy or folk tales. The series was sponsored by Kelloggs and the series producer was Anne Wood of Ragdoll Productions. Shown on ITV, world wide TV, video and at international animation festivals.

BORN TO BE BABE

Mikage is unable to bear a child due to fibroids in her uterus. On the night she breaks up with her lover, she gives herself up to Sakurai, who adores her. Sakurai tells her that he will take Mikage's place as her child, but the next day he turns into a real boy. Mikage is surprised, but she begins to love him like a mother and a sister. At the same time, a news report about the unsettling world situation comes on the radio... The film is a realistic portrayal of a fantasy, with a tightly constructed structure and assured direction that adheres to theory. The ending, which seems to foretell of Japan in the near future, is a heartbreaking coincidence with the title of the film.

Two man stick their heads through a decor, photographs revolve around their heads. In 1989, this film was granted the jury award at the Holland Animation Film Festival. (filmcommission.nl)

At the end the famous wedding march blossoms on to the screen with the magic of the animator's brush.
