Swan Song

This was Carolina Lopez Caballero's graduation film at Farnham (now Surrey Institute of Art and Design), but has a strength and confidence of vision which is unusual in student work. The technique mixes three dimensional work, boiling watercolour, thick paint, ink and collage. The mark-making mixes roughness and calligraphic grace. The film tells a dreamlike story of a king who is attracted to the singing of a mysterious woman. He is disappointed when she turns out to have the head and neck of a swan and finds it difficult to fit into her new role as Queen.

The Phoenix

In this animated adaptation of a story by Sylvia Townsend Warner, we follow Lord Strawberry's search for the fabled bird. He finds it in the deserts of Arabia and brings it home to his aviary. Upon Lord Stawberry's death, however, the phoenix ends up as a sideshow in a fairground. This spirited satire of human foibles, with its timely message about our treatment of nature's creatures, will appeal to young people and adults alike.

"My first film, shot at art school on a crappy Super 8 camera I bought from the market. At the time I was obsessed with Universal Studios horror films, and Dreyer’s Vampyr, and I had just discovered three films by George Kuchar, and Alain Resnais. So it’s a mix of those, sort of. It was shot over many months, as I had to coerce my friends to give me their time, especially the lead, who required many hours of make-up before he killed my friends. It’s a play on Jekyll and Hyde, though how clear this is to the viewer I’m pretty uncertain.” - Ben Rivers

The Water's Tale

At the edge of the world a Child learns from her Grandmother that she is descended from the fairies. She longs to know more but her Grandmother is silent. To find the story of her past, the Child enter the land of The In-between and travels to the beginning of time when Fairies roamed the earth. But the story she finds is not the one she wants. In a fit of anger she sends her Grandmother down into the sea to find the magic story she wishes for. Filled with remorse, she plunges into the sea to bring her back. As the Child sinks, the sleeping world of fairies begins to stir and the long lost secrets are awakened. The Water’s Tale is a story of the interconnection between a woman and the past – herself as a child and the burden of history through the ages.

This short exists only for one reason: I wanted to test the possibilities of the iris of a defective VHS camcorder that I had and the fading of the colors that resulted from VHS to VHS copies (this film is not black and white, it is faded color ). As I had no story to film, I improvised as an actor (Braun kept holding the camera for me), I walked from side to side, subtitled the whole thing with a poem I had written on and… Why not show the results of these experiences for everyone who is interested in seeing you.

After spending his company's money, Ichita dreams of a "treasure hunt". One day, Ichita receives a small gun. One day, Ichita receives a small pistol in the mail, and the two set off on a random journey in a stolen car. On the way, they pick up a couple, a blonde woman and a quiet motorcyclist, who have no idea where they are going or why. These two are also living their own lives, far from reality. The car with the four people in it goes on a long way... The dialogue is casual but stylish. The light oldies pop music is in the background. It's a cool road movie with an unrealistic setting and a mood that mixes speed and weariness. The film was shot on location in Hokkaido, where the road is straight and endless. The filming in the vast landscape brings the characters into sharp focus. The journey of these outlaws, who can only live halfway, is shown in a dashing, unconventional and freestyle.
