In 1998, Kang Chin-Ho (康進和) directed Kavalan (少年噶瑪蘭), funded by PTS and filmed by Wang Film Productions, the theme is an aborigine tale handed down in the Kabalan Plain, describing the protagonist transcending space and time to return to the plain in olden times. The art design was not bad but due to a lack of understanding of Taiwanese aborigine culture, the animation was not well valued by the aborigines.

In the Taiwanese countryside, a high school senior, Shuan, is passionate about playing guitar. One summer day, his parents argue heatedly about money. Pretending to attend the study group, Shuan escaped his household chores and went to the city to hang out with his bandmates. Later that day, a typhoon hit, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Meanwhile, Shuan’s mother had not yet returned home, and his young sister was nowhere to be found.

The little girl, Laqi, ventured into the forest to search for her parents, only to encounter the demon child Luda. As a result, she entered the forest alongside Luda and embarked on a fantastical journey to find her family. During their exploration, Laqi and Luda encountered numerous hidden creatures in the forest, including the Mountain Sprite, Black Dog Spirit, Oil Hoof Cat, and Earth Ox. They also faced various crises and helped each other, eventually becoming trusted friends. However, deep within the forest, Laqi discovered that Luda, the demon child, was actually luring victims for capture. She faced a dilemma: should she trust her friend? Would she be able to find her parents as she wished? Despite facing many challenges and adversities, she gained valuable insights into trust and friendship.

With soft and cute colors as the main key, we used simple designs to depict the little girls' imaginary world.

This is a common phenomenon in Taiwanese daily life. Although it may seem funny, it's a regular occurrence in our daily news broadcasts.

Of the many unrealized projects Yang developed in the wake of Yi Yi, the one that came the closest to fruition was an ambitious animated martial arts movie inspired by his lifelong love of graphic novels and his friendship with Jackie Chan. In this insect equivalent of a theatrical fine-dining experience, termite butchers, with musical accompaniment of a termite pianist, perform a ritualistic slaughter on a piece of power cable. The fact that their climate crisis-induced dietary choice also causes power outages in human cities is the proverbial cherry on the cable. A delightfully strange and pleasantly icky spectacle that combines costume play and animation. Eat up!

Lying quietly in a cine-camera, a film awaits to fulfill its responsibility of projecting 24 frames of images per second after exposure. Nonetheless, I prefer rolling out films outright and fiddling with them by pigments application, collage, scratch, cut-and-mix, etc. Since these are camera-less measures, the projection is unpredictable, surprising, and often so astonishing that I would be mesmerized.
