The Sandman

Based on the classic 19th century tale by German writer/composer E.T.A. Hoffmann, the film investigates the tale's themes of obsession and madness, emphasizing expressionist imagery and theatrical style. The story relates the life of the young student Nathanael, whose childhood memories are haunted by a sinister man. As a child, Nathanael believed this dark figure to be the mythic Sandman, who puts children to sleep by stealing their eyes. When confronted by this same evil presence as an adult, he is pushed toward madness as he tries to confront his childhood fears.

Idiots' Battle

This black and white silent film with music by Helge Schneider, starring Udo Kier as a vampire and Alfred Edel as an Indian chief was commissioned by the Filmmuseum Düsseldorf to inaugurate their cinema organ. The look and feel of the film stems from the silent film era, but the camp style and over use of clichéd characters bears the trade mark of Schlingensief all over. “I love all things kitsch, like opera, and I feel inspired by music. I was interested in silent film but not a great deal”, said the director.

Horror Heaven

Jörg Buttgereit himself plays a TV horror show presenter, introducing the audience to a variety of "Horror classics”. These are of course all short Super 8 films and he shows here his versatility as a filmmaker. The short pieces are all made in 1984 and range from a spoof on the Mummy to a Frankenstein parody, to an amazingly well-crafted stop-motion animated Godzilla-like monster pic called GAZORRA (starring Daktari Lorenz from NEKROMANTIK) to a down and dirty girl-fights-off-violent-rapist segment named CANNIBAL GIRL. Hilarious horror comedy!

Blutige Exzesse im Führerbunker

Early no budget experimental Super-8 short film made by Buttgereit in just one day in 1982. Nazi leader Adolf Hitler has survived the war, holed up in his bunker. There, he re-created his former wife Eva Braun as a Frankenstein monster, along with a “Germanic breeding bull”(played by Buttgereit). With the help of these Nazi-zombies, he wants to take over the world again. But as soon as the monsters awake, they tear their maker to shreds. Much fun and gory effects!
