End Time and The Trajectories of Ancestors (2022) is a video (machinima) essay on the historical fragments of Montana and Native American history. Going deep into the American soil conveyed in the video game Far Car 5 (2018), the work manifests the juxtaposition between religious survivalism on the nuclear threat and End Time, the digital landscape and archive of Montana, and the historical records and testimonies of Native American’s history and movement. This intersection can be conceived as a detour in thinking and questioning the universal issues on colonization, land, race, violence and the appropriation of culture and history in the video game.

This essay film is about Hong Kong as a place, or rather as a series of places, each with their own series of histories. Mak is after public and private histories, and the ways they commingle, intertwine and sometimes even obliterate each other. Her materials are multiple: she takes what she calls “appropriated archival footage and propaganda films from the 60s and 70s done by the British Hong Kong Government," and cuts, loops, zooms, slows and manipulates them to make striking distortions. To these “official” materials, made strange through video manipulation, Mak adds black-and-white Super 8 video of her own, digitally altered to sometimes look battered and archival, highly worked into a beautifully ghostly, grainy, evanescently visible texture. Images are juxtaposed promiscuously in double and quadruple frames, often paired images of intangibly related material, elegantly matched to be thought provoking as well as to offer visual delight.

A Trip to There
In Hong Kong, a stranger wanders and films frantically monologuing next to her camera. Through the windows of the buildings she penetrates the intimacy of the flats, in the streets she lingers over unknown faces, swallowed by the city she seeks to record what exceeds her. It’s after founding a kaleidoscope on the ground that she meets the man with tattoos - he is haunted by a fight.

Part-Time Moon documents a fantasy of an artificial moon that is created inside the artist’s studio. The film is initiated from glazing over on a filmmaking tool. Compare to the real moon, the part-time moon carries an anthropomorphic character: it moves, changes luminosity and color on its own. The camera chases after this organic moon from far to close. It dances, playing hide-and-seek with the camera. The film takes the apparatus usually behind the camera back to the front of the lens, producing a visual-driven narration which is out of the norm.

Take an exhilarating ride on one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world, the Hong Kong Peak Tram. The route opened in 1888, and this 'phantom ride' (a popular early film genre for which the camera was mounted on a moving vehicle) offers glimpses of the harbour and lower Hong Kong in the distance as you descend from 400 meters. But as a funicular railway, the most heartstopping moment is the sight of the upward tram arriving on what looks like a collision course...

From Chinese colonialism and its assertion through the practice of medicine, to French colonialism and their obsession with trophy kills, and throughout the Vietnam war, the animals tell a different side to the story.
