Four Moods

Directed by some of most well known Chinese-language directors of the time, the portmanteau film Four Moods was an attempt to alleviate Li Han-hsiang’s financial troubles during the late 1960s. Arguably one of his best works, King Hu’s short Anger is an adaptation of the famous Peking opera San Cha Kou; set to opera instrumentation and stylishly shot, the film deftly captures the tense showdown between political schemers, avengers and vagabonds inside an inn. Li Han-hsiang’s Happiness, inspired by the Strange Tales of Liaozhai, tells a tale of reprieve for a kind-hearted ghost, while Pai Ching-Jui’s Joy and Lee Hsing’s Sadness both explore the fateful encounters between mortal men and ghostly women.

Cloud of Romance

Little Sister-in-law

Mr. and Mrs. Ho are longing for a grandson. Their son, Ho Chieh and daughter-in-law, Wan Ping, come home from abroad. Wan Ching, the little sister-in-law, is a nurse and comes with Mrs. Ho to meet her sister. At the airport, old Mrs. Ho mistakenly hears that her daughter-in-law is pregnant. After that, Ho Chieh has to attend a business party. However, his wife is not free for it so he begs his little sister-in-law to go as his wife. Wan Ching turns out to be a hit with the guests. In order to please his mother, Chieh asks little sister-in-law to take Wan Ping to the hospital for a pregnancy test and get a false positive report. But through a mistake, Wan Ping gets the report of a sterile woman. She is saddened by it but everyone lies to the old people in order to spare them the disappointment...

Ghost of the Mirror

Adapted from a Tang Dynasty fantasy tale, Sung Chuen-sau used the story of a scholar meeting a female ghost at night, but emphasised neither the killing nor horror but the literary and romantic elements. Scholar Chan (Shih Chun) stays in a remote mansion outside the city. People often fall into the mansion’s well for no apparent reason. Chan looks into it. Later, he sees the girl from the well, Susu (Brigitte Lin), waving to him. She begins to wait on him nightly. Susu was from a wealthy family, but was running away from bandits during wartime, and committed suicide by jumping into the well rather than be caught. After her death, her spirit was controlled by Du Long (Pai Lin). Du Long has forced her many times to harm Chan, but she never has the heart to carry it through. Chan’s pity for her soon becomes love. He goes into the well to retrieve an old bronze mirror, and eventually succeeds in freeing Susu. In the end, to rescue Chan, Susu fights with Du Long and they destroy each other.

Rainbow In My Heart

Chung is in charge of an advertising company in Hong Kong. He's about to marry a model Woo. But Chung finds that Woo is cheating on him on her birthday. He's hurt so he goes to Korea for his new commercial. Chung starts to appreciate a Chinese singer Chelsia Chen by watching TV. He invites her to join his commercial shooting and they fall in love with each other. The commercial's successful in Hong Kong and Chelsia becomes a star now. Chung's uncle urges Chung to invite Chelsia to come to Hong Kong and he does so. Woo suddenly comes up and requires to cooperate with Chung again but gets refused. Woo's mad then turns to cooperate with another directo Choi. However, she's not happy with Choi and still wants to go back to Chung.

Morning Fog

Haze in the Sunset

Tao Kai, a graduate of the University of Music, is forced to take over the position of chairman of the board because his wife's father has died. Because he has opened a branch office in Taipei, he meets a resident singer, Fang Qi, and they fall in love. Tao Kai decides to divorce his wife, Pei Wen, but he never expects that Fang Qi's sister and Pei Wen's father have an unusual relationship and that Fang Qi's sister will end her life because of her shame to Pei Wen. Fangqi's sister ended her life because she was ashamed of Peiwen, and Fangqi needed to recuperate for a short time because she was too stimulated. At that time, Peiwen also lost her eyesight because of her eye problem. Tao Kai went back to see Peiwen, and Fangqi also left. After three years, Tao Kai went back to visit Pei Wen again, but he didn't realise that Pei Wen was still waiting for him. Tao Kai had no face to go back and said goodbye to Pei Wen.
