The Age of Genesis

The end of the world - not only the Christian faith, but also filmmakers have always been fascinated by a possible apocalypse. Apparently also the Brandls, because now there is also from them a contribution to it. Whereby it concerns - as with the end time film typically - naturally not a world end per se. Our beautiful blue planet is preserved, only mankind is not. Except for a few exceptions. A deadly virus is the reason for the extinction of almost the entire world population. But not alone, because in the chaos of doom, to make matters worse, the machines also turn against their creators. Androids, which were actually created to support humanity and are used in almost all areas of society, now see Homo sapiens as a threat that must be destroyed.

For most of our history, the ocean has been regarded as, if not a barrier, an adversary: something to be simultaneously exploited and feared. Ingo Niermann asks us to rethink our response to the fearful oceans, in hope of finding its hidden soul and reaching an understanding with it. In Sea Lovers Niermann offers us a whole chest of new models for reading, touching and feeling the sea. As the seaside theme parks of the early 20th century offered us a safe encounter with the novel and unsettling technologies of the age, could an underwater amusement park allow us closer interpersonal connection with other lifeforms? And just as the domestication of animals into emotional and affective companions made the forests ‘safe’ for our comprehension, could dolphins or cephalopods become our guides to the watery depths that were once our home? Could the salty touch of the ocean itself soften us towards accepting its wild and all-encompassing embrace?

GALAXY

The narrator in the moving image work "GALAXY" is technology itself. "GALAXY" tells the story of the brief encounter of the two characters Touch and Long Swipe. The story is generated by an algorithm and offers an interpretation of an encounter of love and disappointment. Small deviations in the language and the narrative logic reveal our social imprint of how stories are expected to be told and how technology is programmed to follow these perceptions. The mise-en-scéne is a computer-generated galaxy of objects and images reminiscent of the organic, but dismembered and fragmented, reflecting on the possibility of creating new worlds and stories in digital space by following a subjective system of ordering.
